The General Lee, the Duke's custom Charger, would not have been complete without its horn. Created by J.C Whitney Auto Parts, the horn plays "Way Down South in the Land of Cotton". What could be more appropriate for the car horn owned by the Dukes of Hazzard? Many remember the
Dukes of Hazzard Horn
fondly, but how did the Dixie horn become part of the show?
During filming of the Dukes of Hazzard TV show, Executive Producer Paul Picard and Producer Gy Waldron were driving down a Georgia highway when they heard the unique horn. They followed the car the horn belonged to, and offered the owners money until they gave it to them. However, Warner Brothers still didn't want to use that car horn, until one of the Chargers they bought for the show came with the horn already in the car!
In the first few episodes of the television show, the used the real
General Lee horn . After the show became a success, they began editing it in. And despite the high price they paid for the first horn, after that they bought them directly from
e-Bay . Now known only as the Dukes of Hazzard car horn, few remember if it had any other name. The Duke's General Lee would not have been the same without it. The company that created it still sells the horn, which you can put in your own version of General Lee.
