Why Are New Tires Balanced?
To avoid vibration or shaking of the vehicle when a tire rotates, the tire must be properly balanced. This balance is achieved by positioning weights on the wheel to counterbalance heavy spots on the wheel-and-tire assembly. A balanced tire is one where the mass of the tire, when mounted on its wheel and the car axle, is uniformly distributed around the axle. Balancing your tires can stop that annoying vibration and make the your car or truck perform better.

The major causes of tire imbalance that occur in tires is usually due to heavy or light spots in the tire. Variations with the wheels thickness and weld can also cause an imbalance. Same is true with brake rotors and the car axles. Heavy or light spot in the wheel and or tire can cause the wheel and tire assembly to move up and down and not roll evenly. When unequal weight occurs on both sides of the tire, the tire and wheel assembly has a side to side wobble or shimmy. A bubble tire balancer can correct some problems but dynamic spin tire balancer is a better choice. Most tire shops today use a dynamic spin balancer placing weights to correct the imbalance on your car tires and truck tires.

One other cause of vibration and excessive tire wear is improper bead seating or improper tire mounting on the rim. An easy fix if you can see the problem.
Sometimes new tires and new rims are just not round. This problem is called run-out. It can be fixed in some cases by rotating the tire on the rim 180 degrees. However if the tire or rim has excessive run-out replacement is the only answer.
Some Balancing Guidelines
Always have your wheel and tire packages mounted by a reputable tire shop that has well trained professional services mechanics. Their equipment used to mount and balance tires must be accurate and well maintained. A clean tire shop in most cases is a professional shop. Make sure your choice in tire shops cleans the rim and tire of all foreign materials. Have them place weights on the inside of your custom wheel if possible. Some weights are coated to prevent damage to the wheel finish.
